We prefer working with the more personally run smaller scale accommodations in Southern Africa but this is not always possible or feasible. Quality and value for money are also important and due to this reason, we offer larger accommodations in Namibia and Botswana. All these accommodations are rated on personal service and inspected on a regular basis by LB Safaris. Even though we have more than 400 accommodations listed in Southern Africa, some accommodations just offer that little bit more than others do. We generally use the small scale more personally run establishments like bed & breakfasts, guesthouses, small lodges, guest farms and some boutique hotels. We also have a limited selection of the smaller and better 5 star establishments but generally work with 3 to 4 star accommodations. A rustic and tranquil setting or charming country style building with lots of character and welcoming staff enjoys our preference above large organisations. Cleanliness and personal attention are priorities whilst rooms booked are as a rule always with an own private en-suite bathroom & toilet. Large hotels and backpackers are avoided. When booking a self-catering establishment we generally use the AA (Automobile Association) as standard and guide for quality (on average 3 to 5 star)

Variety

Southern Africa as a region offers the traveller abundance in variety of landscape, culture etc. It is therefore not surprising that as a rule accommodations have their own identity and atmosphere. Our preference is for the smaller more personally run establishments rather than large hotel chains. These establishments come in many forms and types and are available from very basic excluding breakfast up to 5 star luxury. Excluding exceptional cases or places where water is extremely scarce, most accommodations offer some sort of swimming pool. Below you will find a short summary of typical accommodations offered by LB Safaris.

Bed & Breakfast: (B&B). Mostly small scale personally run (often by the owner) accommodation with a small number of en-suite rooms. Standard varies from very basic to luxury and as a rule always includes breakfast (diner occasionally offered as extra service)

Guesthouse: Usually larger than a B&B and often personally run by owner (sometimes a manager). As a rule, it usually has between 6 & 12 en-suite rooms and the standard can vary from basic to very luxury. As a rule, breakfast is included and diner is optional. Diners offered vary between simple wholesome meals to cooking of the highest standard.

Lodge: Similar to a guesthouse but usually with own restaurant and often located in a nature or game reserve. Where it is not situated in a game reserve, it usually indicates above average standard. Lodges offered by LB Safaris are often owner managed a have anything between 4 and 60 en-suite rooms. Standard varies from mid range to extreme luxury and breakfast is as a rule always included. Dining is usually of a fairly high standard but not always included.

Self-catering: Staying over in bungalows, small houses, rondawel (small round usually reed thatch housing), apartments etc are well liked by most Southern Africans and therefore are available in many standards, shapes and sizes. Anything from a granny flat behind a B&B up to large bungalow parks. As a rule, we only work with clean and good value for money establishments. The standards are mostly set by the AA (Automobile Association of Southern Africa) and include important factors like cleanliness, atmosphere, setting etc.

Farm & country accommodation: Mostly similar to a combination of B&B, guesthouse and lodge but then situated on a farm or in the countryside. Due to the remote character of this accommodation, type breakfast is as rule included and diner possible. When the establishment does not offer their guest a choice like an ala carte or similar for diner we will include a diner automatically.

National parks: Anything from tents up to luxury, lodges are possible. As a rule, we usually offer a similar accommodation type as in self-catering and occasionally an en-suite tent. Mostly the accommodation is in a camp with a fence to keep dangerous animals out. Camps can vary from several units up to hundreds of units including support facilities like (mini)supermarkets, restaurants (offering breakfast, lunch and diner), swimming pool etc. For small groups like families or friends travelling together we often offer one house with separate bedrooms but sharing one bathroom. Should you be travelling as a small group (family or friends) we might offer one house with separate bedrooms but sharing one bathroom. Should you always wish to have an own en-suite bathroom please let us know and we will take care of it.

Hotel: Even though we as a rule do not work with hotels, exceptions confirm the rule. In the case where no other acceptable alternatives are available or if the hotel offers something special like an exceptional location, rustic setting, is small scaled & personally run we occasionally offer specific hotels. It is possible to offer any of our tours and trips just including hotels. We feel that this will affect the nature of the holiday and the concept we offer and would therefore be mostly seeing the country rather than experiencing it.

Namibia & Botswana: Accommodation offered by us generally complies with same standards as in South Africa. However, due to the low population density and relative large size good accommodation in Namibia is limited. Due to tourism policies in Botswana, good accommodation is either very expensive or limited. Except for the smaller more personally run establishments we also offer a number of larger accommodations.

It is imperative to our philosophy and policies that all accommodations offered in all countries are tried and tested on a regular basis by members of our team. We also know many of our accommodation owners and hosts personally. A rustic and tranquil setting or charming country style building with lots of character and welcoming staff enjoys our preference above large organisations.

Why we only sell complete packages: Due to our extensive network, regular visits, site inspections and knowledge built up over the years we unfortunately know that there are too many accommodations that do not even meet basic standards or simply offer more than they are able to provide. One bad experience can negatively influence or even completely ruin a holiday. It is also crucial that distances travelled are correctly judged. To long or short drives and incorrect amounts of time to experience the route you are travelling can leave you feeling down or even worse, stressed!

Our philosophy is to match the best possible route, itinerary and services to your particular requirements thus ensuring you get the best possible experience, good value for your money and an ideal holiday!

Judging accommodations: As there are numerous different systems judging and grading accommodations throughout Southern Africa, we handle several basic rules when considering listing any accommodation. All above criteria apply and depending on price, what is offered and setting we determine if it is good value for money and acceptable as a true Lekkerbly recommended accommodation. Where there are no restaurants in the direct vicinity we will always offer you D, B&B (diner, bed & breakfast) with exception to the accommodations that have an excellent alla carte menu where we leave the choice in your hands. Please note if you need electricity for medical or other important appliances you should state this beforehand. Some out of the way special places might not have electricity 24/7. Standard for the region is 220 volt – 50 hertz.

This is how we operate and your query will be handled

Step 1) Orientation.

To give you an idea of what you may expect we first make a cost estimate based on the information you have given us. Usually within 1 to 3 days, you may expect a reply, which includes extensive information regarding costs for accommodation, rental vehicle but also other expenses like eating out, fuel costs for the route take and vehicle driven, toll road costs etc. This enables you to make a far more accurate estimate of total expected costs for your journey or holiday! If the route or costs given do not comply, we can adapt it where possible and feasible until you are happy with the estimate. Once the costs given comply with your expectations and you are happy with what we offer we can go ahead and make you a quote.

Step 2) Quote

As we have to provisionally book all services, it usually takes several days to prepare a quote. We will then offer it to you at no charge and with no further obligation. Our quotes are valid for approximately 3 to 7 days. Should you accept our quote we go to the next step.

Step 3) Confirmation and booking.

Your ideal holiday or journey has now been determined and we will go ahead and confirm all services. You will then receive the necessary documents and invoice to confirm all this. The fun and anticipation starts now!
